The calcium binding protein is expressed in the cytosol of granulocytes and released into the inflammatory tissue. The protein interacts with the RAGE-receptor on endothelial cells, mononuclear phagocytes and lymphocytes and triggers pro-inflammatory processes.
IBD Patients, suffering from Crohn‘s disease or ulcerative colitis exhibit significantly elevated S100A12 levels compared to healthy individuals or patients with IBS.
